Lord Mayor praises work of Aids campaigners
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Martin Morgan, has voiced his support for people working in the front line in the fight against AIDS and HIV.
Speaking at a lunchtime rally on Monday to mark Global Awareness Day for AIDS, the Lord Mayor said that he was proud to help bring much-needed visibility to the issue.
“Many organizations throughout Northern Ireland are engaged in a twin-pronged battle on behalf of HIV/AIDS sufferers,” Councillor Morgan said.
“On the one hand, they are fighting to bring HIV/AIDS into the mainstream so that young people will learn the importance of practicing safe sex. On the other hand, these organisations support sufferers who rely on them for practical assistance in their daily lives. These organisations must be congratulated and encouraged to keep up this essential work."
More than 400 men, women and children are living with HIV in Northern Ireland with new cases being reported at an alarming rate.
