New NI law for sexual orientation
A new law came into effect in Northern Ireland today which bans discrimination in employment and training on grounds of sexual orientation.
The new law means that gay, lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual people are protected from discrimination in employment and training. Direct and indirect discrimination, harassment and victimisation on grounds of sexual orientation are also unlawful.
The legislation applies to all employers and covers employment policies including recruitment, training, promotion and dismissal.
Anyone who believes they have been discriminated against may make a complaint to the industrial tribunal.
The Regulations implement the sexual orientation provisions of the European Employment ‘Framework’ Directive (Council Directive 2000/78/EC).
The Directive outlaws discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, religion or belief, disability and age in employment and vocational training.

Man Extradited From US Over Historical Child Sex Abuse
A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for a series of indecent assaults on a child in the 1970s. Damien Desmond Anderson, originally from L'Derry, was extradited from the US to face justice. He was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against a female who was 11 years old at the time of the abuse.

Conscious Clause Slammed
New legislation proposed by the DUP would "significantly weaken protection against discrimination in Northern Ireland for lesbian, gay and bisexual people when accessing goods, facilities and services or buying or renting premises," Dr. Michael Wardlow, Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission has said.

SDLP Calls For More Action On Crime Against LGBT+ Community
The SDLP has said that more needs to be done to tackle crime against the LGBT+ community. Belfast councillor Séamas de Faoite was speaking after the PSNI revealed the number of homophobic and transphobic motivated crimes reached the highest financial year figure since records began in 2004/05.

OFMDFM Launches Sexual Orientation Strategy
The Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) has confirmed that a consultation is to take place on a Sexual Orientation Strategy for Northern Ireland. The strategy will aim to tackle homophobia across the region. Following a meeting of a steering group, a 12-week public consultation will now be held.
