Support To Help Low Income Families Pay For School Uniforms Cut
Support to help low income families pay for school uniforms has been cut by the Department for Education.
The SDLP described the announcement as "alarming" and is calling for an urgent meeting with the Department.
MLA Colin McGrath said: "With inflation rising and many families already struggling to make ends meet, adding this additional burden onto the shoulders of some of the most disadvantaged in our community is disgraceful.
"I will be seeking urgent clarification from the Department of Education and standing four-square against this attack on low income families and children.
"It is absolutely clear, that now more than ever, all political parties need to pull together rather than pull apart. We need to work with urgency to restore the institutions in order to ensure that we can deliver in the interests of all people in Northern Ireland, not least, our children."

A new report has found that parents on a low income are struggling to find enough money for food good enough for a healthy diet. The report, by leading children's charity NCH, said that because of the financial burden on low income families children's diets were becoming nutritionally poor.

A government report has today revealed that approximately half of Northern Ireland’s population have incomes less than £300 per week. The report, entitled 'Households Below Average Income, Northern Ireland, 2004-05,' covered the period of April 2004 to March 2005.

NI Families Hit More By Cost Of Essentials Compared To The Rest Of UK
Families in Northern Ireland are the most impacted with the cost of essentials making up a larger proportion of family budgets, according to the latest Asda Income Tracker. Families in NI had just £83 a week of discretionary income in the first quarter of this year, just over half of the national average.
