Local agri-tec company leads the dairy world

A Rathfriland-based firm are in discussions with major dairy companies to supply a new high-tech system that will increase the efficient management of dairy herds.

Northern Ireland ‘agritec’ business Fionn Technologies, have successfully tested - and are now marketing - an automated system that detects when individual cows in large herds are ready to conceive - a key factor in promoting milk production.

The company is already in discussion with major businesses in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and North America and, over the next few months, hopes to install and prove the patented '4sight' system in these locations.

Claiming 100% reliability, the ‘4sight’ system uses an integrated mix of digitised surveillance monitoring and optical electronic sensors, linked to specially created software to store information and provide a tailored report about individual cows.

Declan O’Hare, Business Development Director of Fionn Technologies said: "Our system helps major commercial organisations to become more efficient, by providing convenient and reliable information about when cows are ready to conceive. In short, ‘4sight’ monitors large dairy herds continuously and without stress, while the specially developed software produces an immediately available and easily used report.

"This tells managers which individual cows are ready to conceive and precisely when this period started. This information is of critical importance, as early detection is the cue for successful conception. The ‘4sight’ represents a major step forward - which is why we are attracting the attention of major dairy companies across the globe".

Mr O'Hare said that the system could also identify infertile animals and that extensive testing had shown that the system to be totally reliable, offering huge gains in efficiency compared to labour-intensive, visual detection by farm workers.

The system is currently being used at The Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland (ARINI) as part of a detailed investigation into factors influencing dairy herd fertility.

Fionn Technologies are also developing software and systems which will allow the technology to be applied to other areas of dairy production, including herd management and health, quality assurance monitoring and bio surveillance and traceability.

The system can assist major commercial dairy and milking equipment companies, as well as research and breeding organisations.
