Industry group set up to advise on seed potato interests
Agriculture Minister, Ian Pearson today announced the Government’s launch of a Seed Potato Liaison Group (SPLG) to act as an advisory body on behalf of seed potato growers and merchants.
The announcement brings to a conclusion the long-running review of the sector following the demise of Seed Potato Promotions Ltd in 2002.
The proposed new Group will be an advisory body which will operate on a non-statutory basis and will make recommendations to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) on issues for the benefit of persons engaged in the commercial production and marketing of seed potatoes.
Announcing the initiative the Minister said: "I recognise that there is a need for an industry based group to represent the interests of the seed potato sector and to make recommendations on how DARD should provide assistance within current support structures.
"I very much hope that the creation of this new forum, to be known as the Seed Potato Liaison Group, will enable a range of sector activities to be proposed for the benefit of the wider industry."
A DARD spokesperson confirmed that letters of appointment are being issued this week following nominations for a total of eight persons representative of growers and merchants to serve on the new Group.
