Belfast Bikes To Be Fitted With Tracking Devices

Tracking devices are to be installed in a number of Belfast Bikes in an effort to stop theft and improve cycling safety.

According to the latest figures, around 40% of the public hire bicycles are currently not in use due to vandalism or maintenance.

The tracking devices, being installed over the next year, have been developed by Ards-based technology firm See.Sense. They will monitor the whereabouts of the bikes while also gathering information on each bike's journey.

Use of the low-power tech has been described has a "world-first pilot project".

Launched in 2015, the public hire bike scheme has been used by more than 10,000 people.
