UK Govt Will Not Allow Joint Authority For NI
The UK government has said it will not allow joint authority for Northern Ireland after the Irish Foreign Minister said direct rule from London could not be imposed without the input of the Irish government.
Minister Simon Coveney made the comment after talks with the main political parties in Belfast on Tuesday.
However, the UK Government said that "it is ultimately for the United Kingdom Government to provide the certainty over delivery of public services and good governance in Northern Ireland".
Minister Coveney said: "There can be no British-only direct rule. That is the Irish government's position."
Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the UK government said: "The UK Government, along with the Irish government, is engaging intensively with the Northern Ireland parties to secure the reestablishment of inclusive, devolved government at Stormont, and the operation of all the institutions established under the Belfast Agreement. That is our clear objective and we are determined to succeed."
