Investigation Launched After Two Armed Robberies In Ballymena

Police have launched an investigation following two armed robberies in Ballymena, Co Antrim.

In the first incident, a man, who was carrying a suspected gun, threatened a female worker in a shop in the Grove street area at around 9.50pm on Wednesday, 06 September.

The staff member locked herself in a store cupboard and the man made off with several scratch cards.

He is described as being around 6ft – 6ft 2inches in height and of slim build. He spoke with a local accent and was wearing dark grey tracksuit bottoms with a white logo on the top of the left leg, black jacket, black gloves and red/grey trainers. He also had a scarf around his face.

In the second incident, which happened just after 11pm, a man carrying a suspected firearm entered a shop on Broughshane Street and threatened a staff member before making off with a number of scratch cards.

He was wearing dark tracksuit bottoms with a white logo on the top of left leg, grey Adidas trainers and a hooded top.

A 33-year-old man was arrested in the Ballymena area in the early hours of Thursday morning, 07 September, on suspicion of robbery and is being questioned over both incidents.

He is being held in police custody.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

Appeal Following Two Robberies In County Down
Police are appealing for information following two robberies in County Down. A man armed with a sword entered a food outlet in Ballykinler and threatened staff on Monday at around 10.20pm. However, he was chased by staff and made-off empty handed. In another incident an hour later a man armed with a sword robbed a service station in Castlewellan.

Armed robber strikes five times in County Antrim
Four petrol stations and a shop in County Antrim have been targeted in a spate of robberies on Friday night. The first incident occurred in a shop on the Rashee Road in Ballyclare, when a man armed with a knife confronted a female shop manager and demanded cash. He made off on foot with a sum of money and cigarettes. No one was injured.

A 70-year-old Ballymena man has been jailed for an axe attack in the town in September 2020. At Laganside Court on Monday, 16th December, William Kirkpatrick, was jailed for nine years in connection with the assault at the Russellstown Road area of Ballymena on Monday 14th September 2020.

Police appeal after Co Antrim armed robberies
Police have appealed for information in relation to two armed robberies which occurred in Co Antrim yesterday. At around 4.45pm yesterday, two men, armed with a handgun and a knife, entered a shop on the Doagh Road, Ballyclare. They threatened staff but left short time later empty-handed.

Accused man claimed he 'did not mean to kill wife'
A civilian PSNI employee has appeared before Ballymena Magistrates Court in Co Antrim today accused of murdering his wife. The court heard that when charged yesterday 46-year-old Adrian Baird of Loughloughlan Road in Broughshane said that he "did not mean to kill his wife".
