Ministers discuss North/South energy
Enterprise Minister, Ian Pearson today had a further meeting with his Irish counterpart, Dermot Ahern to discuss North/South energy issues.
The two Ministers were reviewing progress towards an all-island energy market since they last met in July.
At that time six priority work areas were agreed and a Joint Steering Group, with members drawn from the two Departments and the two Regulatory Authorities, was established to lead and oversee the process.
Both Ministers welcomed the work which had been done by the Group and agreed priority actions for the next six months. In particular, the Ministers invited Energy Regulators and Transmission System Operators to report on a specific work programme and timetable that would enable the objective of joint transmission planning in the electricity sector to be achieved.
In discussing the impact of last week’s power cuts in Northern Ireland, Mr Pearson said: “This highlighted the importance of having in place a strong and resilient electricity network across the island, with effective north/south and east/west interconnection.”
Mr Ahern added that reliability of supply was a key issue for all stakeholders in the Republic and Northern Ireland and confirmed that Ministers were committed to joint action to reduce the vulnerabilities associated with relatively small electricity supply systems.
