Delegates meet on EU future
Delegations from across the British Isles met up in Belfast today to discuss shared interests and co-operation on the future of the European Union’s cohesion policy.
Today's discussions were the first ever joint meeting between UK and Irish members to the European Committee of the Regions to Northern Ireland.
As well as discussing the future of the EU's cohesion policy, delegates heard about the priorities for the Irish Presidency of the EU which begins on 1 January 2004.
Welcoming members, NIO Minister, Ian Pearson said Northern Ireland was eager to participate positively in Europe "to influence and help shape the policies which impact on its citizens".
"To be effective we must speak with one voice and act in partnership with others who share interests and concerns similar to ours," Mr Pearson said.
"The future is bright and we must continue to develop the inter-regional links and pan-European networks that help us realise these opportunities.”
