Co Antrim car trader fined

A Co Antrim car sales firm has been found guilty in court of selling a clocked car.

William Stewart, who traded as Value Car Sales in Glengormley, was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £2,300 compensation at Belfast Magistrates’ Court for a breach of the Trade Descriptions Act.

He was charged yesterday with selling a clocked car to a woman from Kilrea. The Volkswagen Passat car had travelled some 140,000 in England but Mr Stewart sold it with a mileage reading of about 90,000, a breach of the Trade Descriptions Act.

The vehicle odometer had been altered before Mr Stewart bought the car but he had not made sufficient inquiries to establish the true mileage before selling the car to his customer.

A spokesman from Trading Standards Service said that the penalty underlined the need for a motor dealer to make rigorous checks into a car’s history.
