Agriculture Minister visits Winter Fair
'Building a Sustainable Future in Dairy Farming’ was the key theme behind DARD’s participation in the Winter Fair and reflects the Government’s commitment to the maintenance of a vibrant and forward-looking dairy industry, Agriculture Minister, Ian Pearson has said.
The Minister was speaking during a visit to the 18th Royal Ulster Agricultural Society Winter Fair at the King’s Hall, Balmoral.
"Listening to our customers is a priority for DARD and is the focus behind DARD’s Customer Service Review," the Minister said. "This survey is now at its mid way point and I’m looking forward to reviewing this independent research in the New Year."
Turning to future reform in agriculture the Minister said: "The decisions that we take on CAP reform implementation over the coming weeks and months will map out the future of farming support in Northern Ireland for years to come. DARD is focused on ensuring that farmers and other stakeholders have at hand the necessary information to make informed judgements on this issue."
The Minister was welcomed to the Winter Fair by RUAS President, Roly Cunningham and Chief Executive, Michael Guest.

Cold Comfort As Winter Deaths Fall
One of the coldest and harshest winters to hit NI in memory failed to cause any rise in the levels of winters mortalities. Despite the cold weather, last winter (December 2010 - March 2011) there was in fact a fall in the number of deaths registered.

Fire At Fermanagh Sinn Fein Office
Sinn Fein offices at Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh have been substantially damaged following a fire. The top three floors of the four-storey building were severely damaged in the overnight fire and police are treating the outbreak as suspicious.

An innovative campaign, the 'Unite Against Hate' sporting weekend has been launched. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and his Junior Minister Gerry Kelly (pictured) joined forces to support the campaign which highlights all forms of hate crime and challenges people here to unite to stop it.

Charity reveals high rate of death among elderly during winter
Help the Aged have announced that more than 1,500 elderly people in Northern Ireland have died over the winters from 2000. Around 290 people aged over 65 died between December and March last year, it was stated.
