Community 'Shocked' After Pensioner Injured In Aughnacloy Burglary
The local community in Aughnacloy has been left in "shock" after a pensioner was found lying in her garden while trying to escape from intruders on Tuesday night, 23 January.
An 83-year-old woman is in a serious condition in hospital following the burglary, which happened in the Sydney Street area just after 9pm.
Police are treating the attack as attempted murder.
Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Colm Gildernew condemned the attack.
He said: "There is no place for attacks like this in our society. It is extremely concerning as there were similar burglaries in the area last night.
"It was a disgusting incident and the community in Aughnacloy are genuinely shocked about what has happened.
"Eldery people should feel safe and secure in their homes and I would remind everyone of the need to be extra vigilant at this time.
"I would urge anyone with even a scrap of information relating to this crime to bring it to the PSNI so they have as much information as possible to assist with their investigation."
DUP Leader Arlene Foster said: "It is depraved for anyone to ransack an elderly person's home and put them in danger. Their actions are impossible to fathom and as a result of these actions, I understand a woman is now in a critical condition in hospital.
"No doubt this will have been a terrifying experience for the woman involved, especially since it took place within a quiet area. Coming to terms with an incident like this will be very difficult."
