Sinn Féin Call On Irish Govt To Protect NI Citizens In Brexit
A Sinn Féin MEP has called on the Irish government to act to defend the rights of people in Northern Ireland during the ongoing Brexit negotiations.
MEP Martina Anderson made the call as the Brexit negotiations in Brussels begin to discuss the issue of citizens rights.
She said: "In order to protect the rights of citizens in the north, the Irish government now need to act to protect the rights of citizens in the north from Brexit.
"Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has pledged that Irish citizens in the north will never again be left behind by an Irish government and now he has an opportunity to demonstrate that commitment.
"Citizenship rights, human rights, and the rights contained in the Good Friday Agreement need to be protected from the Tory Brexit agenda which is scrapping the European Charter of Fundamental Rights and the Irish government needs to hold firm and ensure there is no regression on rights.
"The democratic rights of the people in the north, including the right to direct representation in the European Parliament also needs to be protected and the Taoiseach should set how he will ensure that right is protected by creating a mechanism for people in the north to continue to elect an MEP.
"We cannot allow any diminution of rights as a result of Brexit and the best way to ensure that is through securing special status for the north within the EU."

Man Dies After Bus Fall In Belfast
Detectives are investigating the death of an 80-year-old man who fell from a bus in Belfast. Police have said that they believe the man was travelling on a 2J Translink Metro bus service at around 11:15am on Friday, 08 November, when he suffered a fall as the bus travelled along Royal Avenue, near it's junction with North Street.
