Public Apology Issued After Neurology Patients Recalled
The Department of Health has issued an apology to over 2,500 neurology patients who are being recalled following an independent review.
The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust announced the recall following a probe into the work of neurology consultant Dr Michael Watt.
Permanent Secretary, Richard Pengelly, "apologised unreservedly" and said a review into the issue would be "open and robust".
Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA welcomed the apology however she said more communication and action is needed.
"I have spoken to many healthcare personnel over the last couple of weeks and I feel Mr Pengelly's comments today very much reflect their personal sentiments," said the south Belfast MLA.
"We are all proud of our health and social care sector and the immense dedication and efforts of staff at all levels within it, so the Permanent Secretary's intervention today is to be welcomed.
"However, it is clear more communication for those potentially affected by this recall is needed, as well as action taken to reassure patients measures are in place to ensure this does not happen again."

The number of adult mental health patients waiting longer than nine weeks to access key services has more than doubled from 338 in March 2016 to over 800 in March 2017, according to new figures. Ulster Unionist Mental Health spokesperson, Robbie Butler MLA, warned that mental health patients could be coming to harm.

Over 2,500 patients in Northern Ireland have been recalled following an investigation into a consultant neurologist's work. It follows a review of the work of neurology consultant Dr Michael Watt. The consultant is not currently treating patients.

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.
