Electoral Commission Investigate Council 'Donation' To Ian Paisley Jnr

An investigation has been launched into a "donation" made to DUP MP Ian Paisley.

According to a report by the BBC, the Electoral Commission (EC) is investigating a payment of £1,500 made by Mid and East Antrim Council to sponsor a tablet at a constituency dinner hosted by Mr Paisley at Tullyglass Hotel in Ballymena last year.

It is understood that Mr Paisley has claimed that the money was paid directly to the Tullyglass Hotel, but the EC are treating the payment as a "donation" to the DUP MP.

The investigation has been launched as under current electoral commission rules, councils are not considered "permissible donors" and any payments from such bodies should be returned.

According to the report, Mr Paisley has insisted that he did not personally receive any money from the council and that the £1,500 in question was paid directly to the hotel.

A statement from Mr Paisley said: "I can confirm that the Electoral Commission is continuing its investigation into Mid and East Antrim purchase of a table at my constituency dinner last year.

"I look forward to them concluding this matter soon."
