Sinn Fein's Deirdre Hargey Elected New Lord Mayor
The new Mayor of Belfast has been elected.
Sinn Fein's Deirdre Hargey will take up the role and Alliance Councillor Emmet McDonagh-Brown has become the deputy Lord Mayor.
Cllr Hargey said she will be engaging in every section of society.
She said: "I have worked with the many and diverse communities which make up our city, I have reached out and will continue to reach out to those in the unionist tradition who have contributed so much to the development of this city.
“I will continue the work in building peace and reconciliation, that work needs to be nurtured, not taken for granted if we are to achieve the progress and prosperity this city deserves."
Cllr McDonagh-Brown said: "Over the past year I've watched Councillor Nuala McAllister showcase Belfast on the global stage as an open, welcoming and inclusive city ready to do business with the world - signalling the impact positive politics delivered by Alliance can have.
"I hope to work collectively with everyone in the Council chamber on the issues which affect all of us. We have a duty to maximise inclusion across the city. That is a challenge I am looking forward to and one which I hope to meet, in order to better the city I love."
