£70,000 Bangor Rainwater Garden Scoops National Prize
A £70,000 rainwater garden in Bangor has scooped an AECOM "Inspire" UK & Ireland Excellence award.
The garden was officially opened in January 2018 at Clandeboye Primary School in Bangor.
The project, completed by BSG Civil Engineering, helps reduce the risk of flooding in the school grounds and surrounding area. It is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland.
The "Inspire" award is aimed at developing and celebrating projects which have improved the quality of life for a community and inspired others to be better.
NI Water, the Department for Infrastructure, Education Authority and the Department of Education were also involved in the project.
Woman Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A woman has been convicted for claiming over £12,000 in benefits she was not entitled to at Craigavon Magistrates' Court.
Joanna Brzozowska claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £12,499 while failure to declare living with a partner. She was given 75 hours community service.
The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.
She is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
Alliance Sceptical On UK's Alternative 'Backstop' Proposal
Alliance Party Deputy Leader and Brexit Spokesperson, Stephen Farry, has expressed scepticism that the UK's alternative 'backstop' proposal would be either viable or acceptable to the European Union.
Dr Farry said: "This paper is more about managing divisions in the Cabinet and Conservative Party than getting the backstop over the line.
"Time is ticking by on an ever shortening window of opportunity to get a Withdrawal Agreement concluded.
"This document leaves many core issues unresolved. Maintaining an open border in Ireland requires not only clarity on customs but also regulatory alignment. It is unclear how a backstop with a time limit can be a backstop, especially given current performance of the UK Government there can be assurance that any future UK-EU relationship can be finalised swiftly. And it is unclear if a backstop designed to address the needs of Northern Ireland can be applied UK-wide without prejudging that wider UK-EU relationship."
