Council To Discuss Proposed Changes To Belfast City Marathon
Belfast City Council's City Growth and Regeneration Committee are to discuss a number of potential reforms for Belfast City Marathon.
The committee is due to meet today, 27 June, to debate reforms proposed by race organisers, Belfast City Marathon Limited, which include a new course and changing the race day to Sunday.
It is understood that the proposal to change the race day from the Bank Holiday Monday was recommended by the Belfast Chamber of Trade and Commerce (BCTC), amid claims that it "greatly impacts trade". Figures reveal that "normal trade is cut in half" compared to a standard Monday trade.
A number of potential new race routes were proposed at a Committee meeting in February, with two draft courses drawn up based on a Sunday race day. Interested parties, including the PSNI, DfI, Translink and Athletics NI, have consulted on the proposed new routes.
Should Belfast City Council back the proposals, a public consultation will follow.
