Mid Ulster Council Urged To Reconsider Traveller Eviction
Mid Ulster Council has been urged to abandon its plans to evict a Traveller community from a car park site at Ballyronan without suitable arrangements.
Making the call, Sinn Féin MLA for the area Ian Milne, said: "I am calling on Mid Ulster Council to abandon their plans to evict Traveller families currently settled on a car park in Ballyronan.
"Whilst there are issues with this site, it's outrageous that they plan to evict families, many with young children under the age of 10, without any concern for their health and safety or without any alternative arrangements being made.
"Sinn Féin have called a special meeting of Mid Ulster Council in order to address this matter ahead of any eviction.
"I have previously held discussions with the Housing Executive, they have a responsibility to find alternative locations for Travellers, but so far they have failed to do so.
"There is now an imperative on the Housing Executive to work with Mid Ulster Council to find a solution and provide these families with alternative accommodation or a suitable site as a matter of urgency."
