UK Govt Accused Of 'Power-Grabbing' Over Brexit Plan In NI

Sinn Féin has accused the UK government of a "power-grab" after it was revealed that it is preparing to remove references to the European Union from legislation in Northern Ireland.

The announcement was made at a briefing between Northern Ireland Office (NIO) officials and Sinn Féin.

The party's Brexit spokesperson, Mairtin Ó Muilleoir, said: "While powers in devolved policy areas such as agriculture and the environment are to be transferred to the Assembly as part of the Withdrawal Bill, the British Government is adamant it can overrule the Assembly.

"This blatant power-grab is completely counter to the Good Friday Agreement and is the outworking of the toxic Tory DUP deal.

"The Tories are intent on imposing Brexit here at the very time the majority of parties in the north, the Irish Government, and the EU are insisting on the north being given a special deal."
