More Than 30 Petrol Bombs Thrown At Police In L'Derry
More than 30 petrol bombs have been thrown at police during localised disorder in L'Derry.
Superintendent Gordon McCalmont said shortly before 10pm on Saturday, three petrol bombs were thrown into the Fountain estate interface, with one igniting and the other two seized intact.
Police who were then deployed to prevent further disorder were attacked with more than 30 petrol bombs and missiles. Bricks and bottles were also thrown at property. No injuries were reported.
Superintendent Gordon McCalmont said: "I would like to express my thanks and admiration to those in the community and my colleagues who worked tirelessly to minimise the impacts of this disorder and indeed bring the situation under control.
"I would also appeal to those in the community to use their influence to help us maintain control of the situation so that we do not have a repeat of this behaviour.
"I would, however, like to reassure the community that we will deploy the necessary resources to detect and deter those responsible. Where this is not practicable at the time, we shall seek to gather evidence to bring those responsible before the courts. There will be consequences for those choosing to engage in this type of behaviour.
"I would finish by saying to those responsible to ask themselves what this type of behaviour actually achieves? People from right across the city do not want this kind of activity on their doorsteps and I would urge those engaged in violence and criminal damage to desist from such behaviour immediately."
Alliance Deputy Leader, Stephen Farry MLA, condemned those behind the violence.
"I utterly condemn this violence. Such reckless acts can readily lead to serious injury or loss of life," he said.
"There are clearly sinister forces at work seeking to engage in attacks on the police, to undermine the rule of law and to cause fear and tension in the vulnerable Fountain community.
"It is vital the entire community rallies around the police In protecting the community and supports shared space, including people having the freedom to live where they choose, free of fear and violence."

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

House of Lords vote for ‘50/50’ police force
The House of Lords has renewed the 50/50 recruitment rule for the PSNI by a majority of 44. It puts into practice a recommendation made in 1999 by Lord Patten that the local police force should be split evenly between Catholics and Protestants. The result of the vote was 141 to 97.

Bethany Community Hall which has now officially opened has been part-funded by the Department for Communities (DfC) with a £400,000 award through the Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund, with Bethany Community Trust securing the additional funding.
