Forest Expansion Scheme Opens
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) today announced the opening of the latest phase of the Forest Expansion Scheme.
The scheme, which is intended to encourage and support landowners who wish to plant their own woodland, is funded through the Rural Development Programme, part financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and DAERA.
Ben Searle from Forest Service said: "The opening of this, the fourth phase of our Forest Expansion scheme, is good news for landowners and the environment.
"Our forests are a hugely valuable natural resource. Our goal is to expand tree cover in Northern Ireland and sustainably manage existing woods and forests. This scheme aims to support and cultivate new woodland creation.
"In the past, the Forest Expansion Scheme has funded a range of applicants from private landowners to local authorities. It has aided a range of developments from commercial woodland to community retreats, on both agricultural and non-agricultural land."
Work To Start On £161,000 Road Repairs Project In L'Derry
Work is to begin later this month on a £161,000 road resurfacing and reconstruction scheme in L'Derry.
The project will be carried out between Buncrana Road and Summerhill Grove on the B194 Racecourse Road. Work will get underway on 23 July.
The scheme aims to greatly improve the strength and surface quality of the roads and also includes resurfacing of some footways and associated kerb replacement.
To carry out the works, a full road closure will be in operation from 16 to 21 August. Diversions will be in place.
Alliance Secures New Signs Warning Against Dog Fouling
Alliance Councillor Lorna McAlpine has secured new signs warning against dog fouling in Portaferry.
Following recent Alliance residents' surveys in the area conducted by Councillor McAlpine and colleagues including Kellie Armstrong MLA, she said the issue was one of the main ones among locals.
"People, particularly in the Windmill Hill area of the town, told us it was a major problem," said Councillor McAlpine.
"I contacted Council officers and as a result, they have now put up 18 new dog fouling signs on Meethinghouse Street and Windmill Hill. Now anyone caught allowing their dog to foul risks a fine of £1,000."

L'Derry PSNI have issued an appeal for information and witnesses after a dog was hit by a person riding a scrambler motorcycle in Creggan Country Park on Tuesday, 13 February. The incident occurred at around 3pm when a man was walking along the pathway with his pet Poodle, towards Forest Park.
