Stranmillis Road Resurfacing Scheme To Be Begin

The Department for Infrastructure has announced that a carriageway resurfacing scheme on the Stranmillis Road, Belfast, will begin on Wednesday, 01 August.

The £180,000 scheme will see works carried out on the Stranmillis Road, from its junction with Malone Road to the junction with Richmond Park, to greatly improve the surface quality of the carriageway.

Work will be carried out over ten consecutive days and will involve a road closure between 09.30 am and 16.30 pm each day with signed diversionary routes in operation during these times.

Temporary road restrictions will be in place with road signed diversions in place.

Graham To Begin Extending M1 And M2 Motorway Bus Lanes

Graham Construction is to begin extending hard shoulder bus lanes along the M1 and M2 motorways near Belfast.

The project involves upgrading existing bus lanes, as well as replacing existing bus lane signs and installing additional CCTV.

The existing Belfast bound bus lane on the M1 will be lengthened by 4.6km between Lisburn Services (Applegreen) and Junction 7 at Sprucefield. On the M2, a new 2.2km bus lane will be provided between Junction 2 at Greencastle and Junction 1B at Duncrue.

To carry out the project, it will be necessary to suspend the use of the bus lanes. However, it is anticipated they will be fully operational again by the autumn. Work on the new sections of bus lanes will then continue and is planned for completion by December. Temporary traffic management arrangements will also be in place.

Foster Called To Make Views Clear About Comments NI Should Prepare For United Ireland

Ulster Unionist Party Chief Whip, Steve Aiken OBE MLA, has challenged the DUP Leader, Arlene Foster MLA, to make her views clear about Peter Robinson's comments that Northern Ireland should make preparations for the possibility of a united Ireland.

Mr Aiken said: "Two days on from Peter Robinson`s comments that Northern Ireland should make preparations for the possibility for a united Ireland and the DUP Leader Arlene Foster is conspicuous by her silence.

"It is not clear who speaks for the DUP right now. Is it Gregory Campbell when he says Mr Robinson 'is right in terms of the analogy of the insurance policy……I think his explanation about the insurance policy is a valid one' or is it Sammy Wilson when he says that Peter Robinson`s comments were 'dangerous and demoralising'?

"Those who are suggesting that this is part some kind of grand strategy being set out by Peter Robinson should be mindful of the outworkings of previous Robinson strategies when he was leader of the DUP – the St Andrew's Agreement which embedded sectarianism in politics, the terrorist shrine at the Maze which he was forced to U-turn on and a Historical Investigations Unit which will be a parallel police force charged with investigating former members of the security forces but ignoring the 47,000 people injured during the Troubles. It is not exactly a glowing track record of success. All his 'strategic' decisions are worthy of review."
