Terrorism Related Offences Could Be Added To ULS Scheme
The Department of Justice has published proposals to add a number of terrorism offences to the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme.
Under the proposals, more than 80 offences linked to terrorism, organised crime and paramilitarism would be added to the scheme and would see people found guilty of crimes such as money laundering, possession of firearms or encouragement of terrorism having their sentences reconsidered.
Under the ULS scheme, the Director of Public Prosecutions can, if he considers that a sentence passed in the Crown Court is unduly lenient, refer the case to the Court of Appeal for reconsideration.
The new proposals were developed in response to a recommendation in the Fresh Start Panel Report on the Disbandment of Paramilitary Groups, and a commitment to consult was included in the Action Plan agreed by the Executive to implement the recommendations.
The Department of Justice is seeking views on the proposals, in particular, whether the offences listed in the paper properly reflect the type of criminality inflicted on communities by organised crime and paramilitary-linked groups.
The consultation is open until 5pm on 02 October 2018.

Study to reshape Belfast city centre launched
NIO Minister Des Browne has today announced the start of a review of Belfast city's regeneration policy following the adoption of the Victoria Square Development Scheme last month. The GB-based consultancy, G V A Grimley, has been engaged to conduct the research and is expected to report to the Department by the end of April.
