Residents 'Lucky To Be Alive' Following New Lodge House Fires
Sinn Féin have said that people are "lucky to be alive" following three house fires on the New Lodge road earlier today.
North Belfast MLA MLA Carál Ní Chuilín said: "Three fires occurred at maisonettes on the lower New Lodge road this morning, causing extensive damages to homes.
"People are lucky to be alive, but thankfully due to working smoke alarms in the homes, no one has been seriously hurt.
"Police and forensic teams on the scene have informed local residents that the fires are being treated as sinister. Whilst it is unclear how this has happened, it is clear is that someone could have died as a result.
"I am working with the Housing Executive and local residents to ensure that the people affected are rehoused in adequate accommodation as soon as possible."

Smoking is the biggest cause of accidental fire deaths in Northern Ireland, according to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS). There have been 53 accidental fire deaths over the past five years and 22 of these were as a direct result of smoking materials.

NIFRS Warning Over Chimney Fires
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is reminding the public of the dangers of chimney fires, after it attended 1,762 such fires last year, representing just over 7% of all incidents in 2013. Chimney Fire Safety Week begins today, and the NIFRS is reminding the public to ensure chimneys are swept and cleaned regularly.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) has warned about the extreme dangers and serious consequences of deliberate fire setting in the countryside. The warning has been issued after a major gorse fire broke out on Black Mountain in Belfast on Monday, 28 May. NIFRS responded to reports of a large fire at about 7pm last night.

Nearly all gorse fires attended by emergency services since the beginning of May have been started deliberately, according to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS). The organisation has been called out to more than 200 gorse fires since the start of this month and it is thought nearly all of the incidents have been started on purpose.
