Alliance Propose Motion To Tackle Verge Maintenance Issue
Alliance have proposed a motion to deliver a way forward in tackling the issue of verge maintenance and grass cutting across the city.
In 2014, the UUP Minister at the Department for Regional Development axed the grass cutting budget, with the result that cuts went from five per year to none. Since then the number of cuts has increased to twice a year but many residents still complain about the poor state of the verges.
Belfast Councillor Michael Long said his motion, which will be brought at Monday's Council meeting, was due to maintaining grass verges being one of the most frequent complaints he receives.
He said: "For almost five years, local residents have been unhappy with the consequences of the UUP decision and it is time to provide a sustainable solution by working together with all relevant parties. Our motion will hopefully help this happen."
Benefit Customers With Danske Bank Receive Payment Early
The Department for Communities has issued a notice to benefit customers with Danske Bank accounts, to inform them that payments due to Monday 03 September, have been made today, Friday 31 August 2018.
No-one will miss out on a payment and customers do not need to take any further action. This only relates to Danske bank account holders. No other banks are affected.
Affected claimants should take account of this early payment and plan their budget accordingly.
The Department for Communities apologises for any inconvenience caused.
10th Culture Night Belfast Launched
Lord Mayor of Belfast Deirdre Hargey has joined in the 10th birthday celebrations of Culture Night Belfast - the biggest evening in the city's cultural calendar.
The programme for the 10th Culture Night Belfast was unveiled this week with over 230 family friendly, free events set to take place on Friday 21 September across the spaces and places of the city centre and beyond.
The theme of this year's Culture Night is "Love", with the evening falling upon the UN International Day of Peace, and accordingly, the programme is packed with "extra love".
Kerry Rooney, Manager of Culture Night Belfast said: "We are hugely excited to be celebrating Culture Night's tenth birthday – they grow up so fast! We have a jam packed programme this year that really shows off what a rich and diverse arts and cultural scene we have here in Northern Ireland.
"Our new Culture Night App will make it easier than ever for visitors to check out what's on offer from family friendly events, to music and dance, to the usual mix of the weird and wonderful, Culture Night has got it all."

Organisers are are expecting a record 115,000 people to attend almost 300 events at over 100 different venues. The principal corporate sponsor of Culture Night Belfast is Belfast Harbour.

A senior fire officer at the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is this week urging people to 'Think Safety First' when building bonfires, and has also underlined a recent reminder not to burn tyres.
