Paisley Petition Closes Today At 5pm

A recall petition calling for a by-election to contest suspended North Antrim MP Ian Paisley will close today at 5pm.

The petition was launched after the DUP MP was suspended from both Westminster and his own party after it was found that he had failed to declare two family holidays to Sri Lanka.

It was discovered that the holidays had been paid for by the Sri Lankan government. Mr Paisley later lobbied in Westminster on their behalf.

The Standards Committee found that Mr Paisley had "breached the rule against paid advocacy" and that the cost of the holidays was "much higher" than the £50,000 declared.

The recall petition, if successful, will force a by-election for Mr Paisley's North Antrim seat. It is the first time in UK parliamentary history that the petition has been used.
