27-Year-Old Woman Prosecuted For Claiming False Benefits

A 27-year-old woman has been prosecuted for claiming more than £25,000 in benefits she was not entitled to.

Ruth Allen, of Crannyfield, Omagh claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £25,075 while failing to declare living with a partner.

She was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for three years at Dungannon Crown Court today, 21 September.

In addition, Ms Allen is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.

Attempted Carjacking In West Belfast
Police are investigating an attempted carjacking in west Belfast on Tuesday, November 19th. At around 5:30pm, a man entered a parked car at Hillhead Court and attempted to steal it. A woman passenger was assaulted when she resisted the man's demands. The suspect, described as a man in his 20s wearing all black, fled the scene on foot.

Drop In Number Of People Claiming Unemployment Benefits
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits has dropped over the past month. According to the latest labour market statistics, 31,500 people claimed in April, 200 less than in March. The figures also showed a 5.3% unemployment rate for the past three months.
