Disappointment Over Delay To New Medical School In L'Derry
Sinn Fein MP Elisha McCallion has described the announcement that the new medical school in L'Derry will not open next year as "hugely disappointing".
It comes a month after it was revealed the development of the campus would be put on hold due to there being no minister in place at the Department of Health to sign off the project.
The first intake of students at the Graduate Entry Medical School at the Magee Campus of Ulster University had been scheduled for 2019, but the political impasse has jeopardised the future of the facility.
£5million had already been spent on the project when Ulster University Vice-Chancellor Paddy Nixon warned it would not be opening next year as approval is still being sought.
The Foyle MP said: "We share the frustration of the university because this is such a crucial project for the city.
"The university has done all it can to advance this project and the onus is clearly now on the Department of Health to play its part.
"I don't believe the lack of an Executive should be a barrier to that. We would all much prefer if power-sharing was restored but unfortunately the DUP are still preventing that by refusing to share power on the basis of equality."

Graduate Entry Medical Students To Benefit From Tuition Fee Loans
Economy Minister Conor Murphy has announced that from the 2025/26 academic year, students enrolled in the Graduate Entry Medical School at Ulster University's Derry-Londonderry campus will be eligible for tuition fee loans. Previously, graduate entry medical students were unable to access government loans to cover tuition fees.
