Police Attacked In Larne Disorder
A crowd of up to 40 people hurled bricks, bottles and fireworks at police in Larne on the night of Wednesday 07 November.
The possibility of paramilitary involvement is being investigated.
The masked gang set fire to a number of wheelie bins which were used as a burning barricade to block the Linn Road area.
The blaze had the potential of spreading to a nearby wooded area before the Fire Service extinguished it.
A petrol bomb was also thrown at police during the disorder but it failed to ignite, and four cars were driven around the area at speed.
Superintendent Darrin Jones said: "At one point, a police landrover positioned itself to be the focus of incoming missiles, in order to protect other vehicles belonging to members of the public which were unable to turn and leave the area."
Police managed to restore order in the area just before 1am.
Three claw hammers and a number of bricks that had been stockpiled to use as missiles were recovered from the scene.
"This was a reckless and totally unacceptable night of violence that posed serious danger to members of the public, police officers- and indeed those who were taking part in it," Superintendent Jones added.
The police also urged the local community in Larne to reject the behaviour and the fear and distress it causes.
"I want to reassure the people of Larne that we are taking what happened last night very seriously and are committed to bringing those responsible before the courts."
A number of lines of inquiry are being pursued.
