Sinn Fein: Common Travel Area Rights Must Be Protected - Brexit
As the UK hurtles towards its exit from the European Union, a Sinn Fein MEP has stressed the importance of preserving the Common Travel Area rights of citizens.
It comes as Prime Minister Theresa May's deputy, Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington revealed today, Tuesday 13 November, that Britain and the EU are "almost within touching distance" of striking a Brexit deal, which he indicated could be achieved by the end of this week.
Martina Anderson, a Member of the European Parliament representing Northern Ireland, stressed the need for ease of travel between UK and EU areas.
"We know that the Tory Brexit agenda is the biggest threat to the rights of the people in the north for more than 50 years," Mrs Anderson said.
"Brexit threatens the rights associated with the Common Travel Area which we warned about and now that's being confirmed in a report by human rights organisations from north and south."
The Sinn Fein MEP highlighted the threat Brexit is posing to travel protections, residency and social rights and urged the EU and Irish government to take action and ensure these are protected for the people of Northern Ireland.
"We cannot allow any diminution of our rights as a result of the Brexit strategy being pursued by the Tories and their allies.
"We have been given 'cast iron' guarantees on our rights by the Irish government. Now we need to see action on those guarantees to protect our rights."
