Scottish National Party Call For Same Brexit Opportunity As NI
SNP leaders have insisted that Scotland should be granted the "same opportunity" as Northern Ireland, to stay in Europe's single market post-Brexit.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon cautioned that without such an agreement, Scotland would be left competing for investment and jobs with a country that was effectively still part of the EU trading bloc.
Her comments follow indications of a draft Brexit deal, as Prime Minister Theresa May prepares to face her cabinet in a so-called showdown meeting over the proposal.
Mrs Sturgeon added that competing with Northern Ireland in a post-Brexit economy if the deal proceeds would be "the worst of all possible worlds for Scotland", and urged politicians in the House of Commons to maintain hope that a better withdrawal agreement is still achievable.
SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford echoed her statements.
The remarks come as DUP chief whip Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has warned that the arrangement for Northern Ireland could lead to the break-up of the United Kingdom.
He claimed that the proposed deal would in the long-term leave NI closely aligned with the EU, and would also serve to increase the mandate for Scottish independence.
