Brexit Deal May Lead To Review Of DUP-Tory Pact
The DUP will review its confidence and supply agreement with the Conservative party if Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal passes, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has warned.
10 democratic unionist MP's currently support the government on key votes, following last year's general election when the Conservatives failed to win a majority in the House of Commons.
That agreement may change if the controversial draft withdrawal agreement is voted through parliament, according to the DUP.
Mr Donaldson was speaking on BBC's The View on Thursday 15 November, and said his party will vote against the draft deal.
He said: "This is the most immediate priority. Part of our agreement with the Conservative party is the Brexit situation.
"So yes, if the Conservative party decided, and were successful in getting this deal through the House of Commons, then absolutely, we will have to review our position with regard to the confidence and supply agreement."
It comes as Northern Ireland's pro-remain parties have met with Ireland's Prime Minister and expressed their optimism over the current deal.
Representatives from Sinn Fein, SDLP, Alliance and the Green Party met with Leo Varadkar and Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney on Wednesday 15 to examine the 500 page proposal and seek assurance on various elements.
Sinn Fein leader for Northern Ireland Michelle O'Neill later said the parties are "broadly positive" about what has been achieved, and added: "The DUP do not speak for the people of the north on Brexit."
Green Party leader Steven Agnew MLA also expressed his party's hope for the current proposal, which he said is the "least damaging deal possible in the aftermath of a hugely problematic Brexit referendum and a negotiation process beset by Tory infighting".
