Call For Road Safety Review After Three School Pupils Knocked Down In Belfast
The Department for Infrastructure is being urged to carry out a safety review of a busy junction in south Belfast after three teenagers were knocked down yesterday.
The Wellington College pupils were involved in the collision at around 8am on Tuesday, 20 November, close to Rosetta Park on the Ormeau Road.
A rapid response paramedic and ambulance crews were tasked to the accident, which happened where the busy road meets St Johns Avenue, a site of many near misses.
SDLP MLA Claire Hanna has urged traffic officials to respond to her previous request and make the traffic lights at St John's more visible.
"There are 5000 kids travelling to and from seven local schools each day and many families want to be able to walk and cycle but are deterred because it feels unsafe, due to the huge volume of commuter traffic," she said.
"I had previously written to the Infrastructure Minister (when we had one) with a number of proposals to reduce the vehicle volume including safe cycle routes, enforcement cameras to deter bad practice, and enhanced bus park and ride facilities further out of town."
Mrs Hanna explained that she had been in touch with the school to offer her best wishes to the year nine pupils who were knocked down, and understands that they are doing well but "undoubtedly very shocked".
"This was a very frightening collision for the students concerned which could have been much worse," she added.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.
