West Belfast Police Searches In New IRA Weapons Probe
Police are conducting searches in west Belfast as part of an investigation into a New IRA weapons discovery.
Officers and a number of police vehicles were spotted in the Lenadoon area on the morning of Tuesday 27 November.
It follows the arrest of a man and woman under the Terrorism Act on Monday 26, following searches in Whiterock, which were also linked to the weapons.
The woman was later released unconditionally.
A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police are carrying out a search of a property in the Lenadoon area of west Belfast in connection with the discovery of weapons and ammunition found in the Rodney Drive area on 14 November."
Earlier this month police discovered the significant haul of weapons, believed to have been used by the New IRA to attempt to kill police officers, on top of a boiler during a fire in Rodney Drive.
Detective Superintendent John McVea branded the find a "significant disruption" to the terrorist group, and said he believed the AK47's and other weapons were used in dissident republican crimes in the Rossnareen area in November 2015 and on the Crumlin Road in January 2017.
