Department For Infrastructure Confirms Progress In A1 Development

A road safety improvement scheme on the A1 in Banbridge is making significant progress, according to the Permanent Secretary for the Department for Infrastructure.

SDLP MLA for Upper Bann Dolores Kelly has welcomed the move due to the dangerous driving conditions on the route, but called for clarity on its completion.

"The SDLP have been consistent in raising the dangers posed by the A1, as certain parts of the road have proved to be treacherous," she said.

"All works to ensure the safety of road users are most welcome.

"However, despite the Permanent Secretary claiming the A1 is a priority for them, the pace of works is concerning.

"It is extremely disappointing that the full completion of the A1 development is subject to funding. Quite simply, you cannot put a price on public safety. I would urge the Department to source and allocate money to see this development through as soon as possible."

Harry And Meghan Decline Invite To NI Town

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have officially turned down an invite to visit a seaside County Down town.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are expecting their first child next Spring, were offered to visit Kilkeel soon after they got married in May.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council extended the invitation after the newlyweds were given the titles of Baron and Baroness of Kilkeel by the Queen.

However, the council was sent a response from the assistant private secretary to the Duchess, which said that while the royal couple welcome their Kilkeel titles and were delighted to be invited to their "namesake town", they could not accept "at this moment in time".

"I am sorry to have to send you this disappointing response but do hope you understand," it added.
