Man Arrested After Young Boy Knocked Down In Newtownards
A man has been arrested after a boy of nursery school age was left in critical condition in hospital when he was struck by a car in County Down.
The incident happened on the Movilla Road in Newtownards at around 5.20pm on Thursday 13 December, at a set of traffic lights close to a primary school.
The child was hit by a Volkswagen Golf.
Police closed the road to traffic due to the seriousness of the incident, with diversions in place at Old Movilla Road and Stratheden Heights.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
Mayor of Ards and North Down borough council, Richard Smart, extended his support to the family.
He said: "My thoughts and prayers are with this child tonight and with the family at this very difficult time."
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service sent four crews following the emergency call.
"Two rapid response paramedics, two doctors and an A&E crew were dispatched to the scene," a spokesperson said.
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on non-emergency line 101.

Man Arrested Following Incident At House In Coleraine
A 43-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an incident at a house in Coleraine, Co L'Derry. It happened at a property on Knockantern Grove in the Mountsandel area on Tuesday, 16 August. The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of possessing of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an offence and assault on police.
