Fire Service Rescue Pensioners From Blaze At Sheltered Accommodation
A number of elderly residents have been rescued from a sheltered accommodation facility in north Belfast following a fire in a flat.
Five fire crews attended the scene at Mount Vernon Court shortly before 10pm on Wednesday 02 January.
Pensioners in their 60's, 70's and 80's all managed to escape without injury, after crews from Whitla, Lisburn, Westland and Central Fire Stations came to their aid.
A man in his 80's was treated for smoke inhalation, while a woman in her 70's and two men, one in his 60's and one in his 70's, were unharmed.
A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire in the flat and ventilated the property.
"Sounding smoke alarms alerted the occupants. The cause of the fire was accidental."
The blaze had been dealt with by midnight on Wednesday

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.
