DUP Slams Sinn Fein Brussels 'Sideshow'
DUP MEP Diane Dodds has hit out at Sinn Fein's leadership in the run up to Brexit, branding their visit to the EU Parliament in Brussels as a "shout for relevance".
It follows Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald's meeting with chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier on Wednesday 09 January.
Speaking from Brussels, Mrs McDonald said the EU would hold firm on the Irish border backstop and that the DUP did not represent the people of Northern Ireland on the issue of Brexit.
Mrs Dodds responded: "Today's visit to Brussels highlights Sinn Fein's role as a bystander in the Brexit process. As pivotal debate begins at Westminster they would rather embark on a sideshow to lean on EU leaders than take their seats and vote. The public in NI deserves better."
Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson slammed the DUP's comments as "hypocritical" from a party that supports the Conservative Brexit agenda which will "strip people of their voice in Europe".
"Clearly Dianne Dodds and the DUP don't know the meaning of irony if they are suddenly concerned about ensuring the people of the north have representation while at the same time backing the Tory Brexit agenda which will deny people a voice.
"The DUP acted as cheerleaders for Brexit knowing that it will lead to the people of the north losing their voice in the European Parliament.
"The DUP also seem to forget the fact that the people of the north have had their say on Brexit and voted to reject it. It is Dianne and the DUP who have been ignoring that democratic vote. If they think supporting Brexit is acting in the best interests then they need to take a reality check."
