NI Drivers May Need 'Green Card' To Travel Across The Border
Drivers from Northern Ireland may need to purchase a "green card" to allow them to travel to the Republic after Brexit, insurers have warned.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said that cross-border drivers will need the card if they wish to drive in countries which are part of the European Union, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
It also warned that those travelling without one may be breaking the law.
Insurance companies are expected to apply "small administrative charge" for the provision.
There are approximately 110 million border crossings each year, according to the Department for the Economy.
A Green Card is an internationally recognised insurance document which provides proof of the minimum compulsory motor insurance cover required by the country visited.
It provides a guarantee of insurance for a minimum of 15 days and can remain valid until the expiry date of the motor insurance policy, providing cover for multiple trips.
The provision will not be required if a Brexit deal is reached between the UK and the EU, or if a transitional arrangement is implemented, however Prime Minister Theresa May's deal was overwhelmingly defeated in the Commons on Tuesday 15 and the Brexit date remains set for 29 March.
The ABI has warned drivers to contact their insurer at least one month before they wish to travel to obtain the green card for proof of insurance.
