DUP Supports Backstop Alternative

DUP Leader Arlene Foster has added her support to calls for alternative arrangements to the Irish border backstop.

The 'Malthouse' proposals have the potential to unify the views of Remain and Leave MP's in Westminster, according to the Fermanagh and south Tyrone MLA.

The 10 DUP MP's endorsed the plan before a series of votes in the House of Commons later today, Tuesday 29 January, which could help shape the further negotiations with the EU regarding the UK's divorce and includes an amendment on the backstop.

"It also gives a feasible alternative to the backstop proposed by the European Union which would split the United Kingdom or keep the entire United Kingdom in the customs union and single market," Mrs Foster said.

"Importantly, this proposal would also offer a route towards negotiating a further trade relationship between the UK and the EU.

"There is no better time to advance this alternative, given the confusion and disarray which is now manifesting itself in Brussels.

"This has been displayed both by the contradictory EU statements and the panic-stricken behaviour of the Irish government."

If Prime Minister Theresa May wishes to find a united front between the Conservatives and the DUP, then this is the proposition which she should not turn her back on," the DUP leader urged.

The Stormont party has been adamantly opposed to the backstop provision due to fears it will damage the Union between Northern Ireland and the UK.
