Calls For Safety Review At Belfast Zoo After Chimp Breaks Free
Pressure is mounting for a review of safety measures at Belfast Zoo after a group of chimpanzees managed to escape from their enclosure.
The mischievous animals got out after making an improvised ladder from tree branches which are understood to have been weakened during the recent stormy weather.
One chimp jumped out of the enclosure and walked along a path with members of the public, while others perched themselves on a wall and watched.
The incident is the second in as many weeks, after a red panda escaped late last month.
Alliance councillor for north Belfast Nuala McCallister said: "We need to have a serious conversation around the future of the zoo and Belfast Council's investment in it. Not a simple open versus close debate but long term sustainability, safety, wellbeing and conservation of animals."
