NI Abortion Protests Staged At Westminster
Campaign groups, both for and against abortion reform in Northern Ireland, have staged protests outside Parliament in London.
The events on Tuesday 26 February were organised by Amnesty International and Both Lives Matter.
A group of women, including stars of hit Channel 4 show Derry Girls, demanded the decriminalisation of abortion and delivered a 60,000 strong petition to the Secretary of State Karen Bradley.
The 28 females, symbolising the number of women who travel from NI each year to other parts of the UK to obtain an abortion, each carried the names of 62,000 petition signatories in suitcases.
Meanwhile, anti-abortion campaigners called for Mrs Bradley to "respect devolution" and not impose "extreme" abortion laws.
The 10 women carried boxes containing 10,000 different names, "symbolising 100,000 people who are alive because of the laws".
The 1967 Abortion Act, which established legal abortion, has never applied in Northern Ireland.
Terminations are only permitted in cases where the woman's life is in danger or there is a permanent or serious risk to her mental or physical health.
