Book Of Condolence For New Zealand Victims Opened At City Hall
A Book of Condolence for those who lost their lives in two mass shootings in New Zealand has been opened at City Hall.
At least 49 people were killed and many others injured after gunmen carried out the terror attack in Christchurch.
Lord Mayor, Councillor Deirdre Hargey, joined Dr Muhammad Saleem Tareen, a member of the Executive Committee of Belfast Islamic Centre, Karen Sethuraman, the Lord Mayor's Chaplain, and representatives of all the political parties on Belfast City Council to open the book.
It will be available for signing in the main reception of City Hall during normal opening hours which are:
• 8.30am-5pm Monday to Friday.
• 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday.
Met Office Issues Second Weather Alert For Saturday
The Met Office has issued a second yellow weather warning for snow and heavy rain across Northern Ireland tomorrow, Saturday 16 March.
It will be in place from 2am until 1pm, meaning most of the day will be on alert. An earlier warning for snow was already in place from 4am until 9pm.
The adverse weather may cause travel disruption as the region prepares to celebrate St. Patrick's Day on Sunday.
SDLP Commends Young Climate Change Strikers
An SDLP MLA has commended the efforts of young people across the world who have been mobilising to raise awareness and inspire action against Climate Change.
Thousands of school pupils worldwide have abandoned the classroom for a day of protesting, with demonstrations taking place in over 100 countries, inspired by a Swedish teenager who protests weekly outside Sweden's Parliament.
MLA for Foyle Mark H Durkan commented: "I commend the young people who have been mobilising to raise awareness of and inspire action against Climate Change, the biggest threat facing our planet and the biggest challenge facing mankind.
"Gone are the days when climate change was dismissed as some kind of conspiracy theory and the concern of 'tree-huggers' and hippies. The evidence of it is irrefutable and the time to fight back against it is now.
"All of us can play our part in protecting the planet; be it by reducing our waste, minimising our car usage or simply recycling properly.
"It is fitting that young people are leading the charge, they will be here after we have gone and they have a real opportunity to do something no other generation has done in history; to leave the world in a better condition than they got it in.
"We should be doing everything possible to help them achieve this but sadly some important legislative changes required to strengthen environment protection here in Northern Ireland cannot be made in the absence of an Assembly."
