PSNI In Call For Domestic Abuse Legislation
A senior PSNI officer has said that legislation to tackle psychological and emotional abuse should be introduced to help police tackle domestic violence and bring Northern Ireland in line with England Wales.
Superintendent Clive Beatty said the law, which has been stalled due to the lack of a functioning assembly, would help officers detect offences and provide victims with more help and support.
Police would also be able to help those who are suffering at the hands of domestic abusers but are not the subject of violence. At present, officers can only use the criminal justice route when domestic abuse involves a crime. Of the 31,928 reports lodged last year, approximately 16,000 involved a criminal offence.
The legislation, as implemented in England and Wales, is aimed at prevention and identifying people at risk of the likes of coercive control, manipulation and mind games.
Anyone who believes they are suffering from domestic abuse or who requires discreet and confidential advice on the matter is urged to call 0808 8021414.

Domestic Violence Targeted
There has been a call for more to be done to tackle the issue of domestic violence. Members of the Northern Ireland Policing Board met this week with senior police officers and officials from the Department of Health & Social Services to discuss ongoing programmes of work to deal with both domestic violence and abuse.

PSNI Received 2,228 Domestic-Abuse Calls Over Christmas Period
The PSNI responded to a total of 2,228 domestic abuse calls between 20th November 2023 and 2nd January 2024, during their annual Operation 'Season's Greetings'. On these key festive dates from 24th December 2023 to 1st January 2024, the service also arrested more under 18s for domestic abuse related offences than the previous three years.
