Alliance Call For Greater Recognition Of Parkinson's Disease
An Alliance Party MLA has marked World Parkinson's Day, Thursday 11 April, by calling for greater awareness of the disease among the general public.
Paula Bradshaw was speaking after a recent Parkinson's UK survey highlighted it as a widely misunderstood condition which many underestimate the impact of.
The MLA for south Belfast said: "The difficulty with the condition is it is experienced and apparent in so many distinct ways. Every individual living with it is different. The survey shows the condition can be invisible and can be experienced in ways which are not always apparent at first.
"Many people seem to associate Parkinson's with shaking, but it also comes with an associated stiffness and slowness which is exacerbated in stressful situations, such as in queues in shops or airports."
Ms Bradshaw said there is a need for greater urgency to ensure that people with Parkinson's get their medication on time in order to be able to function. This necessity should be understood throughout the healthcare profession.
"With greater awareness will come a better quality of life for people living with Parkinson's and their carers," the Alliance spokesperson for Health commented. "I hope recognition of the condition will continue to be enhanced."

Protestors Fail To Confront Alliance Leader
Republicans have this morning missed their target and failed to confront the NI Justice Minister over a prison dispute. They staged their protest in support of prisoners at the Alliance Party headquarters in south Belfast - but failed in their mission to come face to face with the Alliance Leader David Ford who is also the Justice Minister.

The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.
