Early Results Filter In As Local Election Counts Continue
The Alliance and Green Parties are celebrating early successes today, Friday 03 May, as the local election counts continue.
The Green Party's Aine Groogan topped the poll in Botanic but it is not yet confirmed if she will get a seat.
In the Ormiston area of east Belfast, Alliance's Ross McMullan won a seat with 2622 first preference votes, while Peter McReynolds was also deemed elected.
Sinn Fein's Darren Totten was the first councillor to be officially elected, taking a seat on Mid Ulster District Council after topping the poll in Magherafelt with 1,665 first preference votes.
The SDLP's Paul McCusker is deemed elected for OldPark, north Belfast after topping the poll. DUP candidate Dale Pankhurst has also been elected in the OldPark DEA.
A total of 819 candidates are competing for 462 seats across Northern Ireland. Results so far are as of Friday afternoon, 03 May and the final picture for local government will not be officially confirmed until Saturday 04.

‘BELT UP’ OR ‘PAY UP’ CAMPAIGN
THE launch of a new shock TV advertisement coincided with the release of a major survey commissioned by the NI Department of the Environment (DoE) on the wearing of seat belts in Northern Ireland. The shock advertisement, which was aired for the first time on Wednesday June 13, is part of a campaign encouraging drivers in Ireland to ‘belt up’.

Detectives have renewed an appeal for information following a deliberate arson attack at a vacant property in the Weaver's Grange area of Newtownards. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 17 November, 2023. Police and firefighters were called to the scene at around 12:40am.
