Talks Begin To Restore Power-Sharing At Stormont

Political leaders from Northern Ireland's five main parties have met at Stormont today to begin talks to restore power-sharing.

These new talks aim to break the impasse at Stormont, which saw the executive collapse in January 2017.

The fresh talks process was announced in a joint statement by Prime Minister Theresa May and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar following widespread calls for progress in the wake of the murder of journalist Lyra McKee.

The two premiers said the aim of the talks process is to "quickly reestablish" full operation of the institutions of the Good Friday Agreement, the NI executive assembly and North-South Ministerial Council.

This follows the council elections held last week, which saw Alliance gain 21 seats and the DUP lose eight seats. Sinn Féin held their seat count at 105, while the UUP and the SDLP won 75 and 59 respectively.
