Balmoral Show Gets Underway
Thousands of people are set to flock to the Balmoral Show today for the opening of the farming community's biggest agri-food event of the year.
The gates opened for the 2019 showcase this morning, Wednesday 15 May, with over 120,000 visitors expected to browse the trade stands and livestock classes over the next four days.
Located at Balmoral Park just outside of Lisburn, the usual mix of farming displays and family activities will be on offer, as well as over 650 trade stands.
Balmoral Show attracts top quality livestock, all competing for prized red rosettes and prestigious Balmoral Championship titles. With over 3500 animals entered, the excellence and variety on display is unrivalled in Northern Ireland. There are livestock classes for a variety of farm animals from cattle, sheep, pigs and goats to poultry and rabbits.
The Children's Farm showcases an abundance of cute, cuddly baby farm animals. Children are given the opportunity to hold, stroke and even feed the baby animals provided by Ark Open Farm. Visitors also have the chance to meet snakes, tarantulas and more from Mantella- their aim is to bring you up close and personal to weird and wonderful animals from around the World with their popular Zoo-to-you Interactive Animal Encounters.
The Healthy Horticulture area will entice and excite green fingered enthusiasts. Ulster Beekeepers and CAFRE will provide interactive areas as well as herb and wildlife gardens. This area aims to promote all the different sides of the horticulture industry, and can be a tranquil space away from the hustle and bustle of the show.
Visitors can also see various sheep shearing and wool handling competitions in the Shearing Pavilion, and the traditional Young Farmers Day will take place on Thursday with ladies football and a game of tug of war on the castle lawn.
An entertaining experience from start to finish, street performers will amuse the crowds with colourful costumes and silly antics.

£6m Allocated To Environmental Farming Scheme
Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots has announced the allocation of £6 million for the Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS). Making the announcement, Minister Poots said: "I am delighted to confirm that we have processed 92% of all EFS Wider and Higher 2021 claims and where a payment is due to these businesses they have been made.

New £14m Funding Package Announced To Develop Environment Projects

Under the fifth round of DAERA's Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS), successful applicants can expect to receive their online offer of an agreement in the next couple of weeks.

Minister 'Takes To The Waves' To See Work Of RSPB
Edwin Poots has "taken to the waves" for a visit to Lower Lough Erne to see the work of the RSPB to enhance breeding habitats on a number of islands. Speaking after the visits, the Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Minister, said: "Any action to help our declining populations of breeding waders, especially curlew, has to be welcomed.

Man Killed In Farming Incident
A man has died in a farming accident in Co Fermanagh. The victim, 71, is thought to have been attacked by cattle on his farm near Ballinamallard. The incident happened over the weekend. An investigation is now being carried out by the Health and Safety Executive.
